This wine was first created with DOC Controguerra classification in 1996. This classification exists in just a handful of municipalities in the province of Teramo, in northern Abruzzo (Controguerra, Torano Nuovo, Ancarano, Corropoli and Colonnella). The regulations for this classification permit international varieties and we chose to plant Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The Cabernet clone was purchased from France and has proved outstanding, not excessively herbaceous, mellow and particularly pleasant blended with our Montepulciano and a small portion of Merlot. The name Colle Cupo comes from property purchased near to our company, at Campodino named “Il Cupo”. It lies on a hill with excellent exposure that was already home to a vineyard which we replanted with Montepulciano. This gave rise to the name Colle Cupo (colle meaning “hill” in Italian).
